Suzanne F. Butler

Savannah- Suzanne Dillon Fauber Butler of Savannah, beloved wife of M. Tyus Butler, Jr. for 44 years, died at home on Monday, February 24, 2014.

Mrs. Butler was born in Richmond, Virginia, September 27, 1947, to Robert Lee Fauber and Virginia Erwin Fauber. She was educated at St. Gertrude High School in Richmond and The College of William & Mary, where she was a member and officer of Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity and from which she was graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in both English and Mathematics. She was a teacher in the Henrico County, Virginia School System, and at Mount de Sales Academy in Macon and St. Vincent's Academy in Savannah. While at St. Vincent's, she was selected in 2000 as a STAR Teacher, described by her STAR Student as "encouraging within all of her students an enthusiasm for learning and a desire to exceed all expectations." She collaborated with her mother-in-law, Professor Eugenia Butler, in editing the final edition of the English grammar and usage textbook Correct Writing. Suzanne was also a talented floral designer and arranger and, with her much loved friend Catherine Cullum Belford, was co-owner of Fiori floral design. A life-long Roman Catholic, she was baptized, confirmed, and married to Ty at St. Paul's Church in Richmond and was a former communicant of St. Joseph's Parish in Macon and Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Savannah, where she served on the Blessed Sacrament School Board. At the time of her death, she had been, for a number of years, a communicant of Cathedral of St. John the Baptist Parish in Savannah, where she was a member of the Council of Catholic Women. She was also a member of the Lachlan McIntosh Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former member of the Junior League of Savannah. She was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her husband and by her daughter Margaret Butler Maurer and husband Ralph of New Orleans, sons Marion Tyus Butler III and Robert Walker Butler, both of Savannah, brother Robert Lee Fauber, Jr. of Philadelphia, nieces Michelle and Maura Fauber, grandson Ralph Dillon Maurer, and cousin Patti Sheehy Kelly of Boston.

A visitation with the family will be held at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel, 7200 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, February 27th, followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Monsignor William O'Neill at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on Lafayette Square, at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 28th, with interment in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Green-Meldrim Parish House of St. John's Episcopal Church on Madison Square.
